Chip,

I guess my categories are an attempt to take your first two categories hardcore/casual gamers and try to understand what they will do this Christmas given the options on the market. In your rankings I would be in category 2 as I play all the 3D games but the only online game I currently play is UO which will switch to Everquest when it ships.
I have to believe that most of the Hardcore gamers already have a Voodoo2. Is 3DFX's big plan on October 12 to try and convince them to buy another one this Christmas ? I personally hope it is more than that but if it is not then I believe they have some problems. For the gamer who already has a Voodoo2 in their system I only see two options, either buy a TnT or another Voodoo2. If they want the ultimate framerate for online play at high resolutions then they buy a Voodoo2, otherwise they probably buy a TnT. The TnT allows them to run in high resolutions, has better color depth on some games and is a good 2d card and since they already have a Voodoo2 card they already have support for Glide based games. In my mind buying a Banshee if you own a Voodoo2 makes very little sense, you gain windowing but no performance and you have to deal with the various Glide drivers overwriting each other.

If I am a gamer and starting from scratch what do I buy? Well if I am budget constrained then I buy Banshee, otherwise I think I would start with TnT. If I then later want to play a Glide based game then I pick up a Voodoo2 and add it to my system. I really do not want to spend 3 slots in my computer on graphics cards

In summary I am having a hard time currently figuring out how 3DFX is going to move alot of Voodoo2 cards going forward. If they cannot keep selling these then they need to start moving alot of Banshee by way of system OEMs or they need a new product in 1st quarter. I would love for Glide to be their saviour but I am not as confident in it as you are. I think going forward the vast majority of games will be DirectX or Open GL. If 3DFX was still in Dreamcast then they would have had a bunch of Glide specific content. Today though I do not see a compelling reason why a game developer would only code for Glide.
I would be glad to hear where the flaws in my logic are.

Eric
