I didn't know that. Given the quality of some of the novels that have come out of Latin America in this century, I have to wonder what we missed.

I could add some names to your list, but if we added all the ones that belonged there we'd be hogging the bandwidth a bit. If Rick wants one piece to convince him that words convey emotion and spirituality as well as any other art, I'd suggest Tolstoy's short story "What Men Live For"... I think that's the one. It's been a while. Two small kids in the house greatly improves one's appreciation for literature, and greatly reduces the time available to indulge it.
