I don't believe anything the Japanese government is doing. I don't think the LDP can reform the system especially when they are so weak in the upper house. They are just throwing money at the banks to keep them afloat. I can't see this is the real reform they need. They might not even pass that legislation or implement it effectively.

However, I have never been to Japan and just base this on the media here.

I think the rally in the Yen is some people who are short think that maybe other people think that maybe the Japanese goverrnment knows what it is doing. So they covered their positions. This on top of people generally covering Yen positions due to stuff Fleckenstein has been talking about. I can't see that it will last - based purely on the purchasing power parity theory. The question is whether Japan will continue to export capital as it has in the past and therefore keep its currency above PPP with the US dollar.
