Some thoughts about Sony's HiFD drive.

I believe that as stated in Sony's previous press release
that the external drive was not in their primary interest
and it would follow the introduction of the internal drive
was a correct assessment.( thanks to Bill Polk for re-posting
this press release )

asiabiztech.com

They obviously can't do the internals, and are suggesting
that the internals will be released in the 1st quarter
next year.

It is my contention therefore that if they in fact had
internal models good enough for the OEM's to evaluate
that they would be shipping them and that they wouldn't
hold back a retail internal product due to OEM acceptance
( they are different markets ), further that OEM testing
and qualification will take at least one quarter or more.

Sony's HiFD drive won't be available to the OEM's end
user until after qualification and adoption ( if ever )
sometime in the 2nd quarter next year, by that time
IOM should have some 23-24 million drives installed.

One other thought about the HiFD. I think that one
of the the areas that K.E. didn't understand about
the computer industry was the way to dominance
of the market thru predatory pricing and believe that
this above all other reasons led to his demise.
I fully expect the OEM cost of Zip drives to be in the
$39.00 range by the end of the 2nd quarter next year.
While it's true that Sony has deep pockets I don't
think they will be willing to sell a HiFD drive
to the OEMs in this range.

Could it be that unlike Sony's previous press releases
the omission of Iomega as a competitor is acknowledging
their shortcoming.

IMO
