A similar theme was expressed a few years ago in The Great Reckoning by Davidson and Rees-Mogg. They wrote that deflation has followed every war, except for WWII. Cold War spending following WWII prevented an ensuing deflationary cycle. However, they noted, with the demise of the USSR in 1989 the Cold War ended, and we could expect the long absent deflationary cycle to begin.

Davidson and Rees-Mogg discuss the deflationary aspects of technological innovation, the possible consequences of deflation on off-budget obligations of the Treasury, the possible impact on the value of the dollar... An interesting book.
