Yuedong,

No way is IBM fixing Y2K problems for free. In November of 1995 IBM formally announced their commitment to have their software products Y2K clean by the end of 1996. IBM has LOTS & LOTS of software products... operating systems, teleprocessing monitors, DBMSs, security, & on & on. I think someone told me that the 4th edition of IBM Y2K product status catalog had something like 9,000+ products.

IBM has very clearly & consistently said that customers must be running newest releases of software. This is big ticket work for everyone involved. If a customer is running a back release & needs to upgrade it can be very time consuming.

And it means that customers that do upgrade will be very much commiting to continued software license revenues to IBM.
