Microsoft partners often get badly burnt in the longer term when Microsoft decides it wants their profits. OK, Microsoft is not
about to start making workstations and servers (more profit in
software). But, I am concerned that the Cellular Irix tech, when
integrated with NT, will not be exclusive to SGI machines. Hence
Compaq, Sequent, Unisys etc could end up getting this tech indirectly through Microsoft.

Plus this sort of deal causes bad rumors to spread about the future
of IRIX. I do not believe for one minute that SGI will drop IRIX,
but some people may get this impression, thus discouraging them
from buying IRIX products now, or developing software for it.
