Joel, in answer to your query a while back, I subscribe to an ISP because it gives me more reliable access to both the Internet and AOL than AOLNet iself.

It's worth it to me to pay the extra $10/month to get a fast Internet connection that's not slowed down by the tremendous loads AOL gets on their web servers. And AOL is actually quite a bit faster over TCP/IP than through a direct dial-up. Try it sometime. I used to access AOL through my modem directly, but it was really terrible waiting for the incredibly slow access-- even before the unlimited rate plan. But I haven't noticed any degradation in AOL speed since the unlimited rate plan took effect, probably because of how I access the system.

One exception to that, though: newswire reports about stocks on AOL are SUBSTANTIALLY slower now than they ever were before the unlimited rate plan, and often, the system times-out and just gives you an error. I have to use quote.com now to get wire reports; AOL is too frustrating.
