INDIANAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 8, 1998--Brightpoint, Inc.
(NASDAQ:CELL.O) announced today that Iridium LLC has selected
Brightpoint as a provider of various services with respect to wireless
handsets and accessories sales and fulfillment for Iridium World
Roaming Services. Brightpoint's services will include sourcing,
packaging and programming terrestrial wireless products for Iridium
Service Providers, Gateway Operators and global subscribers.
Brightpoint will be providing these competitively offered services in
addition to providing value-added logistics services to certain
previously-announced Gateway Operators in Brightpoint's capacity as
the Iridium Primary Global Vendor for satellite equipment logistics.
Iridium World Roaming Service provides subscribers with
cross-protocol roaming capability across previously incompatible
terrestrial wireless networks, while maintaining one telephone number.
This service is offered to all Iridium customers as well as existing
cellular customers who wish to take advantage of Iridium World Roaming
capabilities.
Iridium LLC is developing a global digital wireless
communications network that will combine the worldwide reach of
66 low-earth-orbit satellites with land-based wireless systems to
enable subscribers to communicate using handheld telephones and pagers
virtually anywhere in the world. Iridium World Communications, Ltd.
