Novell Says Not Competing With Microsoft

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Network software firm Novell Inc (NOVL - news) does not believe in aggressive competition with Microsoft Corp (MSFT - news), its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Eric Schmidt said.

''We are trying to avoid head-to-head competition with Microsoft. We all tried that and it didn't work,'' Schmidt told a news conference in New Delhi.

Earlier this year, Microsoft alleged Novell was unhelpful in honoring a subpoena seeking information to help Microsoft face an anti-trust trial. Novell then offered no comment.

A month later, Microsoft decided not to collaborate with Novell over Sun Microsystems Inc (SUNW - news)'s Java programming language.

However, last month, Novell agreed to distribute Microsoft's Internet Explorer, an internet browser.

''We have opted to closely work with them (Microsoft) to make sure that our customers' networks work well,'' Schmidt said.

Asked if Microsoft posed a medium-term threat, he said: ''So far we appear to be winning.''
