Chris, I do not know the details of the economics of the "bottoms" and you may be right that these do not depend on the price of crude. Do you know how much "bottoms" you get in a typical, let say, 50,000 barrel per day refinery? How are bottoms disposed off now? as asphalt and tar products? or are these simply burned? I would guess that there is an economical differential between current practice and conversion of the bottoms to saleable liquid hydrocarbons and that this differential would depend on the current price of "normal" liquid hydrocarbons.
