I realize what is posted on internet stock threads is somewhat suspect, however this post from the Yahoo IOM thread outlines some potentially interesting developments if it turns out to be true !!

The Roy Utah group is getting the 250MB Zip ready for release. If they don't have it ready by Comdex some people are going to be very disappointed. Iomega's big bet is on this product. It is supposed to be able to read the 100MB disks. If they don't make it this year they will allow superdisk to take too much market share. This product will probably sell for about $200. It will replace the Zip that is now selling for $199. This is also why it is important to get the box makers to install as many internal IDE drives as they can. After this one is released the box makers will only want the new one. They need to clear as much inventory as possible ahead of time.

The second unit that I know of is the 2GB single platter replacement for Jaz. This is a MR technology drive designed to meet the challenge from Castlewood head on. The target price for the drive is $249 and $39 for the cartridge. The current Jaz product is out of production and I have been lead to belive that Iomega has started production on this drive. The engineering group in Milpitas are building the test systems at the present time. This drive was (or is still being)designed by by a new group of engineers in Colorado that were hired from HP. I believe what I have been told.

The prices for the Jaz replacements do not meet Castlewood head on but I believe that they have the possibility to be produced with a profit. These companies just can not continue to ship product that costs more than it can be sold for.

I believe that Sony is taking the remaining inventory of the Jaz1 product. They do not want the Jaz2 but are looking at the new drive.

It these guys pull this off and the stock price does not improve I can't tell you what is wrong.

The main problem may actually be market saturation. We know that every computer does not have a Zip or Jaz type drive but maybe the retail customers just don't see the need for it. Some of us appreciate what a hi capacity cartridge can do. But the general user does not understand. there are also other confusing factors like CD-R and CD-RW.

Watch the trade magazines. They need to get the announcements out this month to get the customers in the booth next month.
