Leftist governments were primarily a result of poor, tremendously poor economic conditions and in the case of Germany fascism stemming from the deal imposed on Germany after WWI.

What leftist governments that ushered in WWII? Weimar Germany was a center right government gave way to Nazism at the drop of a hat. The same pattern emerged in Italy and France. The British government was extremely conservative during the 30s, with Neville Chamberlain convincing the world Hitler was a good chap. Meanwhile Ford and other big American companies actively bankrolled and did business with Hitler before the war started. Fascism was a direct result of the collapse of a staunchly capitalist world economic system. The threat of communism was, in my opinion, merely a propaganda tool used by the fascists.
