Blair and Clinton are making a tragic mistake by staking their reputation / credibility on the fact that further deterioration can be avoided. They should save their speeches for now, and work in the background, in order to avoid raising expectations. Being politicians, they could not resist the temptation of trying to get political kudos for leadership. When the serious decline comes, they'll look like chicken running with their head chopped off.
