equitities are now being sold to raise liquidity for a variety of reasons.....loss covering on the part of hedge funds for losses suffered in other areas, margin and fed calls on individual accounts in the US, cash raising against fears re: the future including (hard to believe) bank shut downs due to y2K, recession, new as yet unrevealed crises i.e. more hedge funds, brasil, continued slide in the japanese markets, russia's budget that has no capital to support it, need I say more? Good stocks will now be sold and quality stocks with above avg p/e ratios will drop relative to equities already devalued as the cycle continues.
