Worldwide sales of computer chips are expected to rise 12 per cent next year, rebounding from a decline of 6 per cent this year, a market research group says.
Gartner Group's Dataquest research unit said weak demand in Asia and volatility in the market for memory chips would hamper results in the first half of next year, and then sales were expected to pick up in the second half.
Revenue from computer chips was expected to rise to US$155 billion next year.
Revenue from chips used in computers, consumer electronics and other devices has fallen as prices plummeted, demand waned and too much manufacturing capacity was opened. That, on top of the economic turmoil in Asia, which had been a key growth market, has resulted in weaker earnings for most chip-makers, including Intel Corp. ''Despite the positive growth we anticipate for 1999, the industry still faces a stiff challenge,'' Dataquest analyst George Shiffler said. ''Demand throughout Asia, including Japan, for semiconductor-based products will remain sluggish at best.''
