You are absolutely correct. If you sell the stock and buy LEAPs, you are speculating that the stock will make a huge move before January 2001. Only you can decide if you are willing to risk your entire investment on that chance. In general, I think it is prudent to limit options to 5% or 10% of one's portfolio.

VLSI needs a close over 7 to turn the chart around and it had a little trouble staying above that earlier today.

I really like your prediction of $50. IF VLSI gets to 50 and IF I still own as much stock as I have now and IF I don't squander it on another stock, then I'll throw the best party that you've ever been to and invite all my friends on SI and Yahoo at my expense. There are about as many IFs in this statement as in yours but both of them might happen LOL. BTW, you will get an invitation! :o)
