DALLAS, Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT, Toronto: NTL) retained a strong hold on
the number-one position in the U.S. and Canadian call-center markets, according to the latest figures
from the PELORUS Group.

Nortel Networks ranks first in the U.S. with 36.1 percent of systems shipped in 1997, and it leads in
Canada with an 85.5 percent share of systems shipped in 1997. After combining shipments to each
country, Nortel Networks holds the top position with 41 percent.

Nortel Networks' call-center offerings consist of customer-care solutions from its Symposium, Norstar
and DMS-100 portfolios. These products enable customers to get quick, efficient service while
accessing call centers using any media they choose.

Sheila McGee-Smith, director, Call Center and Operator Services, for the PELORUS Group, said, "The
PELORUS Group expects that Nortel Networks' performance will be even more impressive in 1998 and
beyond when results for the Symposium Call Center Server are part of the mix." The PELORUS
Group's report covers systems shipped in 1997. Nortel Networks' Symposium Call Center Server
became generally available in April 1998 and has been received strongly in the marketplace.

Nortel Networks' call-center solutions are ideal for environments that embrace all the advantages of
voice, data, video and fax. Nortel Networks' success relies on the Unified Networks blueprint, which
encompasses a full breadth of solutions designed to meet customers' current and future needs.
