You have been around long enough to appreciate this.

Do CPQ and Dell Feb 92 to Feb 94 (don't know how to do that on SI but you can look at the front of the 80 month chart) - then imagine you are looking at which to invest in. I think you would have made the wrong choice, especially based on the comments you just made to eddie.
Chart is techstocks.com

In march of 1994 Dell looked anemic, it was still below it's February 1992 levels. A worse story than CPQ today for sure, since it had dropped to less than half of it's high 6 months before. CPQ looked like a rocket, up 400% in the same time. Nothing but blue skies.

CPQ continued to do well for another 2 years, but the absolute best time to sell CPQ and buy Dell would have been right at that point, where Dell looked like a loser, going nowhere, and CPQ looked like the king of the hill.

Past performance is not a good indicator of what's coming. If I had sold all my CPQ and bought Dell at that point I would be worth 5 times what I am worth today. But why would I have unloaded a great winner stock like CPQ for a loser like Dell, a stock which was still at the level it had been at 2 years before?? Dell investors would have done better at a bank, would have done as well putting the money in a mattress. Right? Sound familiar?

just food for thought for us old fogeys.
