Your protestations bring to mind a scene from the movie The Magnificent Seven, itself an americanized version of the Japanese classic The Seven Samurai.

The lead characters, played by Yul Bryner and Steve McQueen are trying to recruit the character played by James Coburn. They show up just as Coburn and a third person are dueling to see who can draw fastest: Coburn with his knife and the other guy with a gun. They face off and draw. Coburn, without a word, retrieves his knife, resheathes it, attempts to return to his nap. Meanwhile the other is saying, "I won didn't I." Finally, Coburn looks up and says his first words in the scene:

You lost.
