Michael and Tom,
It is my understanding that MOT uses their own ASICs in their handsets and ERICY has a very good relationship with VLSI. ERICY and VLSI are rumored to be working on several new products and VLSI has a new CDMA chip set on the market. I have also heard rumblings that VLSI recently won some business that would have gone to QCOM so I wouldn't count on either MOT or ERICY as being the source of new business. I'd also like to point out that the analyst said "the opportunity exists for the company's application-specific integrated circuit chips to be incorporated into a major manufacturer's digital handset". This doesn't imply to me that QCOM closed any new business. A lot of companies have the opportunity, including QCOM, VLSI, DSP, eg.
The bottom line is that until design wins are confirmed by either of these companies, everybody is speculating, including me, QCOM investors like yourselves, the analysts, and the source of my information. I'm sorry to sound so pessimistic, but analysts are frequently wrong and relying on them to make investment decisions can be the kiss of death. I'm not here to rag on anybody. I'm only here to share what I know and as always, I'm open to comments.
With regards to message number 16260 on this board, exchange2000.com, I have heard that ERICY and VLSI are working on an Internet communicator product that will allow connection speeds of up to 1 MBit per second. The Nokia 9000 can only download data at GSM speeds of 9.6 KBit per second and a 1 MBit per second rate is orders of magnitude faster than the 48 KBits per second that the write speculates will be available in the year 2001. Apparently ERICY and VLSI are using Bluetooth technology to develop this new product. Either Mr. Nordstrom wasn't aware of this endeavor or it isn't happening, but I think the latter is most probable.
Best of luck and have a great weekend.
