10/07/98 - Mexico City Bans 40% of Cars in Smog Siege

Mexico City, Mexico - Extremely high smog levels in Mexico City have driven the city's environment officials to ban
40 percent of the city's vehicles from driving today, reports Reuters. The ban, which applies to vehicles with license
plates ending in zero or even numbers, affects 1.5 million of the city's 3.4 million vehicles. Exempt from the ban are
public-transport vehicles, taxis and some newer vehicles designated as nonpolluting. Health authorities, to protect the
health of children, have also ordered schools to suspend all outdoor activities. Along with the steps to reduce motor
vehicle-related pollution, many factories have also been ordered to cut production. Mexico City is home to the
world's worst smog.
