jbe, I protest in the strongest terms your statement, "We need never fear that the United States will introduce elements of the RR's maximum program: for example, the death penalty (by stoning) for adultery and heresy, as indeed some on the Religious Right DO advocate." I associate with and identify with the finest examples of the RR, and have attended both National and State RR conventions. NEVER have I ever heard anyone even whisper of such views. You must be associating with the most radical elements of militant anti-social cults such as the "Christian" Patriot movement based in Idaho in order to find examples of such views. And I do not know if even them would support such extreme measures. I have never associated with them, so I wouldn't know, but personally I doubt whether they would support such views. In any event, what you said is the equivalent of characterizing the mail bombs of the uni-bomber as being "elements of the Liberal Left's's maximum program"---a statement I'm sure you would strongly protest against, even if you aren't a self-described member of the "Liberal Left".
