Can't comment on NVLS as I don't know who they are. As far as AMAT goes, they are the market makers for the capital equipment group. Everybody buys their stuff. Building fabs, however, is a tricky venture. Many of the semi companies have been burned by outfitting fabs with target equipment; that is, equipment that can realize a relatively narrow range of semiconductor technologies (as in feature size). In the past few years the lives of these technologies have not been long enough to outweigh the massive capital outlay to purchase the equipment for the fab to build them. This has hurt those companies that got burned and has put their next generation purchases off in time, which has hurt AMAT and companies like them. AMAT, however, is the industry leader so they are probably a good bet if you want to buy into this industry. For my own tastes they are too closely watched by the mutuals. You may consider LTXX instead. They build semiconductor test equipment. They have been really volatile in the past few months but you could make money here. This is also a market with few competitors.
