But the question is, have they ever attempted to write off their advertising as "one time non-recurring charges" ? Practically everyone else in the industry was doing it- all the search engines who payed extortion to Netscape to be on their search page considered that cash to be one time events, even though it was a 1 year contract that was renewed each year.

In any event, the intense scrutiny of AOL by the SEC this quarter is no doubt making many of the net stocks "clean up" their books in order to avoid the same fate. When cleaning up their books results in sharply lowered estimates, one can make one's own conclusions as to the "real" earnings potential of many of these firms.
