"The reason SGI fascinates me is their unrealized potential"

Nick,
Years from now you will be saying the same thing, but you will be pissed about it. The important thing to remember about this company is that making money is not a priority.

As a research institution, they are whiz kids on a mission to make the best widget.

As a fast growing, big time technology company, they are utterly hopeless. They are so conceited about their product they think it should sell itself. The task of producing important, valuable products and delivering them to customers is completely beyond them. They don't even know where to start. They are a bunch of geeks masquerading as business people. Their products are really cool but are more effective at impressing other geeks than at performing some earthly task which real humans are willing to spend real money on.

Do they really "solve the world's toughest problems"? No. Their work is comparable to that of people who solve those strange little metal or wood puzzles you find in a novelty store. You're impressed for five minutes, and then lose interest because it has no impact on your life.

This company is destined to be a footnote in the history of Silicon Valley.

But that's just my opinion.

Bill
