*******************OFF TOPIC: ABORTION*******(well Catholics anyway)

jbe, I was also raised a Catholic as you might have gathered. My general impression is that many, if not most Catholics in the U.S. don't really have a problem ignoring the official dogma on birth control (based on both polls and contacts). I don't think it's pushed very hard at the parish level these days. Although the mother church is so short of priests now, the average pastor must be in his 60's. The church line on abortion still gets pushed pretty hard, judging from conversations with my parents.

As you say, the U.S. isn't where the problem is. Or the developed world in general. It's the poor and overpopulated places like Mexico and Africa where the Church is growing, and where the pope is still a star. On a political level here, the Catholic church is pretty restrained compared to the more politicized fundamentalists, though last election I recall excommunication threats for Catholic politicians not toeing the abortion line.

This is another issue that's almost hopelessly polarized. I think more honesty would help, but the double standard runs so deep here. Funny thing is, I've read that teen pregnancy rates (to cite one element) are not particularly different than in the '50s. There were a lot more shotgun weddings in those days, though.

Cheers, Dan. (on another uncheery subject)
