Ish,

Took the kid out yesterday to a little island where we fish now and then. We use a sea kayak, single-seater but I take off the rear cargo hatch and let him sit there, which works pretty well. I always let him troll a spinner behind us, which has been pretty much futile in the past. Yesterday something of pretty good size grabbed the spinner, leading to a pretty insane minute and a half, during which time I discovered the severe limitations of a kayak as an open-water fishing platform. Joey was jumping around squealing and whacking me about the ears with the rod, the fish was going around in circles; there was a good chop running, and I was thinking about nothing except keeping the boat upright. Finally fish got the line tangled in the rudder and snapped it off, which was a huge disappointment to Joey and a huge relief to me.

I'll never get away with not trolling, but next time I'll splash a bit with the paddle, and hope the fish get the message. I think I need a bigger boat.

The kayak works ok in mangrove swamps, though, especially with one person in it. A lot like bass fishing, except for snapper and a few others that I only know by local names.

Steve
