One more thing to note:

The prior major corrections and recovery's occurred within the same quarter. So the decline in October '97 was offset by the rebound in late '97 which erased the sharp drop and masked from most 401k investors. The same was true in the summer of '96 and the Winter of '95/'96.

This time will be very different. Loses can't be buried. The investors who have been used to seeing their money go up 4-7% per quarter are now in for a fright! People will talk and there's bound to be a backlash against stocks.
