Hong Kong stocks open sharply up on HSBC
HONG KONG, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Hong Kong stocks were sharply higher in early Monday trading on the strength of HSBC Holdings which lifted the blue chip Hang Seng Index up 230.44 points, or 2.71 percent, to 8,737.23 at the opening.
Blue chips were mostly up with HSBC Holdings jumping HK$10.00, or 6.83 percent, to HK$156.50 on short covering. This compared to its London close of HK$152.50 on Friday.
Strong performances in other Asian markets fuelled active buying and short-covering in early trade, brokers said.
''Foreign investors seem to be more postive on Asian stocks, and shares rose from Tokyo to Bangkok this morning,'' said Antony Mak, sales director at Vickers Ballas.
Hopes that Hong Kong may cut interest rates soon also supported the market, he said.
The Hang Seng Index extended gains, up 4.15 percent to an early high of 8,854.98 points.
