Morgan Stanley Dean Witter & Co. (MSDW) to Take Advantage of Digital Certificates to Secure Online Transactions and Communications Using VeriSign Onsite 4.0

October 12, 1998 10:01 AM

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- VeriSign, Inc., VRSN the leading provider of enterprise digital certificate solutions, today announced that Morgan Stanley Dean Witter & Co. MWD has selected VeriSign OnSite(SM) 4.0 to secure its online communications and transactions with its institutional business employees and customers worldwide. Using VeriSign OnSite 4.0 and taking advantage of the S/MIME protocol for secure email, MSDW will issue digital certificates to its employees to communicate online while ensuring that corporate information is kept safe and private. MSDW will also offer its institutional customers the ability to conduct high-value Internet transactions in real-time using digital certificates as a key competitive advantage for the company.

"We are committed to providing our employees and our customers with the greatest degree of convenience and the highest level of privacy and security when engaging in internal communications or business transactions," said Steven A. Ruegnitz, principal at MSDW.

Leveraging VeriSign's existing public key infrastructure (PKI), MSDW will begin issuing digital certificates to approximately 15,000 employees for secure email communications. This initial deployment, to be completed by the end of Q1, 1999, will be used primarily for secure email using the S/MIME protocol. This will permit end users to digitally sign and encrypt electronic mail and attachments, allowing for enhanced security through authentication of the sender and recipient as well as the privacy and integrity of the message content. These certificates will enable secure electronic communications via the Internet and will ensure secure worldwide business-to-business communications.

Following the issuance of digital certificates to its employees, MSDW will begin deploying digital certificates to its multi-national customer base. Through the use of digital certificates, MSDW will enable its institutional customers to manage online investments, stock trading, and contract communications with the confidence that their transactions are private and have not been tampered with in any way, a critical security component when sending financial information or an authorization for a transaction.

"Morgan Stanley Dean Witter & Co. is the clear leader in offering superior, high-value financial services, and its decision to secure its business with VeriSign OnSite 4.0 is a testament to the value it places in secure, private online financial transactions and communications," said Richard Yanowitch, vice president of marketing at VeriSign. "By leveraging the security of digital certificates, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter & Co. is able to offer its institutional customers and employees the confidence that business and transactions conducted over the Internet will be private and secure."

VeriSign's suite of enterprise certificate authority (CA) software, combined with their mission-critical back-end processing services, provides the solution that MSDW needed for a streamlined implementation of robust and scalable CA technology. Using digital certificates, MSDW can authenticate the identities of its institutional customers and employees for online interactions. With VeriSign OnSite 4.0, MSDW is now better positioned to offer its employees and its customers the value of secure, private communications and transactions using the Internet.
