Can't a marathon be any # of miles or kilometers as we call it in Canada?

Isn't marathons sporting events organized for runners? Could they be organized for charity, yes, sometimes?

Aren't there dozens of marathons each year? Did I tell you I am only a beginner, but have a few goals?
