Network Appliance and Sybase Deliver Data Management Storage Solutions for Database Environments

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (BUSINESS WIRE) - Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ:NTAP) and Sybase, Inc. (NASDAQ:SYBS) today announced the certification of Network Appliance's network file servers for use with Sybase(R) Adaptive Server Enterprise(R). The companies worked together to optimize and test Network Appliance's (NetApp) dedicated file server appliances, known as "filers," with Adaptive Server Enterprise to ensure improved performance and the highest degree of data availability. Customers benefit from decreased administration and centralized storage for both UNIX(R) and Windows(R) NT environments.

"Market acceptance of Network Appliance(TM) filers in the data access and storage market has positioned us as an industry leader and we chose to partner with Sybase because of its leadership in data management," said Dan Warmenhoven, president and CEO of NetApp. "NetApp's partnership with Sybase enables a large and growing market of database customers to leverage the benefits of NetApp filers."

Optimized exclusively for network data access and retrieval, NetApp filers provide industry-leading performance, reliability and ease-of-management for UNIX and Windows NT environments as well as the Internet. With this partnership, corporations can now gain these advantages in a fully supported Sybase enterprise data management environment. The filer enables Sybase customers to leverage their existing Sybase infrastructure with no impact on application performance.

NetApp filers deliver tangible performance and storage-management benefits with the patented WAFL(TM) file system, which is optimized to reduce I/O bottlenecks. The filer offloads the overhead of file system management from the server CPU, freeing it to tackle database-specific tasks. Unlike raw I/O storage systems, which are difficult to expand after configuration, filers operate as single file systems, which can be easily grown simply by adding new disk drives to the system with no database downtime. The NetApp filer also offers greater performance and availability for Sybase customers. With RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) built in, NetApp filers also provide exceptional protection for the customer's data. Using a Network Appliance feature known as Snapshot(TM), which maintains an online, read-only copy of the file system, Sybase customers can greatly simplify their backup strategies.
