Michael,
I guess it all depends on your perspective and what you value, and what values you want to see in your leaders. For example, I would find it harder to say "Yes, son. I knew he carpet-bombed Mesopotamia to hell in order to protect his buddies in Kuwait and Bahrain," or "Yes, son, I know he allowed his cabinet to do defy Congress and authorize a secret and illegal war against Indian peasanta in Central America," or "Yes, son, I know he directly authorized the bombing of a country we had no gripe against whatsoever," than "Yes, son, I know he cheated on his wife and lied about it under oath."
My point is that your cherished presidency, to me and to a lot of people all over the world, has NEVER been an office vaunted for its particular adherence to morality or law, espcially international law. So please, pretty please, give up the high-minded rhetoric. You're obviously an extremely intelligent and eloquent person. And I know you're right to believe that the president or any leader should adhere to such values and principles. But the truth is few if any presidents actually have. |
