All: Latest thoughts on best NAT/proxy software for DSL w/ LAN use?
I'm getting the DSL line turned on tomorrow, and am still unsure how I want to hook it up to the home LAN. What I'd like to do is run the DSL modem straight into the hub, then let the various machines on the network link into the hub to get internet access. (A second best solution would be to link from the DSL modem to my main machine, then use a second NIC to go from there to the hub)
I'm pretty sure that I'll want a NAT, not a proxy server. I can't get static IP addresses from my provider (US West) without paying lots of $, and I understand that if I use DCHP server mode in NT, I won't be able to see other machines on my lan when I'm not connected to the internet.
I've tried Sygate, but can't get the service to start properly, and Sygate has ignored my detailed request for help for 8 days now.
Any pointers, advice, or suggestions would be most welcome. I've worked through most of the Auxiliary on this, as well as deja news, and while a few things have been helpful, I'm still undecided as to how to proceed from here. I may try NAT32 or NAT1000 (tho the latter seems a little pricey.)
If I were sure a proxy wouldn't cause problems, I'd be tempted to try 602's Internet Server Lite (details at 602pro.com ) which got a nice writeup at pcworld.com recently. Anyone tried it?
