This announcement puzzled me as well. We all know how big that Xeon module is, and how much of a power hog it must be.

Then again, the original Covington Celeron (the one sans L2 cache) puzzled me, until I realized that Intel was establishing the Celeron platform, using Covington only as a stop-gap measure until Mendocino was available. Paul already hinted that Intel could be pre-empting the future lower-end K7 systems. But could this announcement be the beginning of a new plan by Intel to push the Xeon processors into the desktop? If so, then that would mean that the current 450 MHz Xeon is only being used as a stop-gap measure until a more suitable processor was available.

Xeoleron, anyone?
