That said, I think that MSFT still makes more money as one company than they would as many.

That was the conventional wisdom in the 20s when standard oil was broken up but actually what happened is all this added value was unleashed when they broke up the company.

Those that chose to hold their original Std oil stock (which was now stock of 5 companies I think, Esso, Chevron(?) etc) did better than they would have with the monolithic company.
