On the contrary, Paul's analogy with cars makes perfect sense. Why would anyone want to buy a Porsche for five times the price of an Acura Integra? Is that Porsche really five times better than the Integra?

Why shouldn't Gateway offer a very high-end desktop system using the most powerful x86 processor out there? Yeah, it's not like Gateway is going to sell very many of these systems, but then again, Xeon's volumes are still miniscule compared to Pentium II and Celeron.

With this system, Gateway is targeting those who have money to spend and who have the desire to possess a computer with the most powerful x86 processor. Of course, it won't be the most powerful x86 processor three months from now, but that isn't going to stop the rich nerds from buying their toys.

Don't know about you, but I sure see the point, even during these times where sub-$1000 desktops grab more headlines than the super-$4000 ones.
