Philippines approves impotence drug Viagra
Monday October 12, 6:34 am Eastern Time

MANILA, Oct 12 (Reuters) - The Philippines on Monday approved the sale of the impotence drug Viagra.

Initially, about 13,600 Viagra tablets would be released to selected pharmacists in the country where an estimated 2.8 million males suffer from various degrees of impotence, executives of U.S. Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE - news) said.

''Viagra is a product which is found to help desolate couples live a very healthy life,'' Pfizer country manager Carlos Gasparian told a news conference.

The drug, to be sold only on doctor's prescription, would be available on the local market in 20 days, he said.

It will sell at 450 pesos ($10.47) a tablet.

The Bureau of Food and Drugs had approved its release, bureau director Quintin Kintanar told Reuters.

Tests on 500 men in clinical trials in Hong Kong, the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia showed the drug to be effective in approximately seven out of 10 men overall, Pfizer said
in a statement.

At least one sector sounded upset.

''This proves the impotence of the regime of President Joseph Estrada in dealing with priorities,'' Oscar Atadero, secretary general of the 500-member Pro-Gay Philippines, said.

''The approval of Viagra proves that his idea of public health is catering to the needs of the rich.''
