Not familiar with patent laws and whether there are any advantages to assigning patents outside the company. Advantages meaning better protection of processes. The immediate disadvantage of not "owning" assignment of a patent, I imagine, is that the company is prevented from licensing the technology and, therefore, will not benefit from the full enjoyment of the patent (read profit). This does not seem to make sense in a closely held company.
