David Lynch's first feature set the tone for all his films to come:
Eraserhead is dark, hallucinatory, and paranoid--like one long
nightmare. Here Lynch uses black and white, like a German
Expressionist with a little Kafka and Chaplin thrown in, to paint the
sketch of a shlub (the recently deceased Jack Nance) who sires (we
think) a squawking, otherworldly baby. The dream sequences,
unexplained dancing mutants, and assorted other oddities that reappear
in Lynch's later work all debut here, in the ultimate midnight movie.
Definitely not recommended for prospective parents. --Marina
