General Commentary
After just one day of earnings season and a 54 point gain in the Nasdaq, there were a number of talking heads proclaiming an end to the correction... While our regular readers know that we are guardedly optimistic about the intermediate- to long-term outlook for the tech sector, based on superior earnings potential and discounted prices, it is way too soon to proclaim that the bear market is over... Fundamentally, the short-term earnings picture remains clouded by the worldwide financial crisis... Technically, most of the major tech stocks have yet to take out their most recent highs - not to mention their 52-wk highs... So, while Monday's session was encouraging - especially for the chip and chip equipment industries, it is important to recognize that the healing process will take time... In fact, investors should not be surprised if the patient suffers a relapse or two along the path to recovery.

Earnings will continue to be the top story for the next couple of weeks... All eyes will be on Intel (INTC) today, as chip giant is due to report after the close... Street looking for $0.79, well above earlier expectations but still below year-ago gain of $0.88... Given a steady stream of good news out of the chip sector in recent weeks, Briefing expects INTC to beat estimates by one or two cents...
