Business Brief -- ALCATEL SA: Packet Engines Inc. Agrees To Buyout for $290 Million

The Wall Street Journal -- October 13, 1998

Alcatel SA, the Paris-based telecommunications company, said it agreed to buy Packet Engines Inc.
of Spokane, Wash., for $290 million. Closely held Packet Engines makes a high-speed
computer-networking technology known as Gigabit Ethernet. Alcatel, primarily a supplier to
telephone companies, recently noted its ambitions in the computer-data-networking arena, especially
in the U.S. corporate market. Most other data-networking companies, such as Cisco Systems Inc.,
already have purchased Gigabit Ethernet companies. In addition to the cash payment, Alcatel will pay
$20 million for an incentive program and $5 million for an employee-retention plan. The deal is
expected to close in two months.
