Windows CE machines are really weak in processor, memory and connectivity (except tied to the mothership of MS Office). But people are buying the PC add-on.

The Newton 2000 is a much more flexible, independent instrument and uses a very popular platform among the handheld crowd, doctors, field people (read Pen Computing mag). The Newton has the handwriting now at a fast processing speed (160 mhz on ARM chip) and has a web browser and can print on multiple printers regardless of platform. It's easy to write programs for w/o bloat.

Now if the Newton can also connect to the MS office mothership AND put some advertising to say it finally made it to what it promissed in 1993, then we would have a killer machine.

I too am worried about Apple. Look at the Bandai internet appliance. It's in a few PC mags, but nothing like the add /instore blitz of WebTV. Missed that boat too?

But overall the Next deal is good. Regarding legacy PPC aps, running on a virtual machine aka Softwindows on the Mac os is workable. With chip speeds going to exceed Pentinum it won't matter.

Again it all boils down to putting a good spin on a minority, which is tough. The morale of the minority needs to be boosted first before fighting anything.

Sincerely,
Ben
