Monday October 12, 7:59 am Eastern Time Company Press Release HP Is No. 1 in Workstations for the Third Consecutive Quarter HP Also Led PC Workstation Segment in Q2 With 46 Percent Market Share PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 12, 1998-- Hewlett-Packard Company strengthened its position as the top-ranked worldwide workstation vendor, shipping more systems than any other vendor in the combined worldwide UNIX(R) system and PC workstation market in the second quarter of 1998, according to Dataquest's Advanced Desktops and Workstations Q2, 1998 Worldwide Shipments Report. HP heads the combined workstation market segment for the third consecutive quarter, with 31 percent share and with the number of units shipped between Q1 1998 and Q2 1998 increasing by 10.5 percent.
According to the report, in the worldwide Intel Architecture/Windows NT(R)-based workstation market, HP shipped just under 88,000 units during the quarter, gaining market share and extending its overall lead to 46.5 percent of the market. The report also indicated that HP has a three-to-one lead over the nearest competitor in units shipped.
''The Dataquest workstation-market report proves once again that HP's strategy of providing a choice of UNIX system or Windows NT workstations from a single vendor is what workstation customers want,'' said Jean-Charles Miard, HP Kayak PC Workstation general manager. ''It also demonstrates that HP Kayak PC Workstations are becoming the PC workstations of choice for users in commercial, technical and creative markets.''
The Dataquest report also revealed that HP earned the top unit-shipment market-share position for Windows NT-based workstations in the United States, retaining leadership over Dell, Compaq and IBM. HP shipped more than 53,000 units in the United States, recording a 49 percent market share for the quarter and a growth rate of 37.1 percent over the first quarter of 1998. HP significantly outsold all competitors, picking up market share at the expense of Compaq whose U.S. market share declined between Q1 and Q2 1998.
''A company that can capture the entry point of the workstation market with a high-volume product and simultaneously continue its advance in the high-value-added segments gains a significant advantage in the battle for worldwide market dominance,'' said Peter ffoulkes, principal analyst at Dataquest. |
