Newbridge Networks Delivers Integrated Management of Broadband Access and Backbone Technologies
Newbridge Solution Enables Deployment of Broadband Infrastructures, Extending the Reach of Advanced Services
TELEMANAGEMENT WORLD, Dallas, Texas, October 13, 1998 - Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN; TSE: NNC) today announced its plans to deliver industry-leading integrated network and service management for the Company's broadband remote access solutions, including broadband wireless and Asymetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL). Traditionally known for its strengths in managing multi-service backbone networks, the Siemens / Newbridge MainStreetXpress™ portfolio of network and service management products enables new licensed operators and established service providers to aggressively deploy broadband access infrastructures to extend the reach of existing and new advanced services. This demand has resulted from the tremendous growth of the Internet and multimedia services.
A major challenge facing service providers that has been met by the MainStreetXpress network and management portfolio is the integrated management of broadband wireless and digital subscriber line (DSL) access domains with asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) and Internet Protocol (IP) backbone networks. This capability enables the end-to-end delivery of a broad range of business and residential services in a scalable, cost-effective manner.
"Newbridge Networks has historically led the industry in understanding the value that end-to-end managed solutions bring to our customers," said Alan Hawtin, Vice President, Network and Service Management, Newbridge Networks. "We are pleased to continue this tradition by tying in two new access technologies: ADSL and wireless. The Newbridge® managed broadband access solutions enable service providers to extend the reach of advanced multimedia services to their business and residential customers."
A key advantage of the Newbridge broadband wireless ATM solution is its ability to deliver multiple services from the same network platform, including high-speed Internet access, two-way data, voice, video and multimedia. The MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager, the industry's most powerful management platform, provides seamless end-to-end network and service management of broadband wireless and ADSL access over ATM, frame relay and IP backbones.
The MainStreetXpress Service Subscription Manager (SSM), which leverages the underlying MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager, is a web-based service management application that supports authentication, accounting, self-subscription and user control of carrier and multimedia service selection. The SSM's integral wholesale and retail modeling of service management supports collaborative marketing of telecommunications-based services between a telecom infrastructure provider and its associated content provider partners.
Both WIC Connexus and MaxLink Communications Inc., 28GHz spectrum holders in Canada, recently selected Newbridge as their vendor of choice for the delivery and deployment of commercial LMCS networks in Canada.
MaxLink Communications is a consortium that develops and operates new local telecommunications services. It is licensed in Canada to provide a range of competitive voice and high-speed wireless services through the use of 28GHz radio frequencies.
"Network and service management was a significant driver in our decision to choose the Newbridge end-to-end broadband wireless solution," said Joel Bell, Deputy Chairman, MaxLink Communications. "This comprehensive management capability enables MaxLink to effectively use our huge amount of bandwidth and flexible service platform to quickly provide both traditional and enhanced services. It permits us to monitor and control our network efficiently, and provide quality of service commitments to our customers."
Newbridge Networks combines the benefits of ATM and wireless technologies to offer the most powerful broadband wireless access solution in the industry. This solution is used for "first mile" connectivity to cost effectively deliver a full range of data, voice, and video services from a single platform to a wide variety of customers including large and medium businesses, SOHOs (small office, home office), and single and multiple unit residential users.
With Newbridge ADSL, network service providers can offer not only business Virtual Private Network (VPN) services and Internet access, but value-added services such as premium quality IP telephony and digital video to residential and business customers. They can also extend service management functions to their content-provider partners, enabling them to partition and configure services for end users directly through the MainStreetXpress Service Subscription Manager software.
The Newbridge ADSL solution is integrated with the MainStreetXpress 36170 MultiServices Switch, and is managed by the MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager and the MainStreetXpress Service Subscription Manager.
"The Newbridge ADSL products and our collaborative development of a unique service subscription management application definitely set this solution apart from competing vendor offerings," said Rita Brown, Assistant Vice President, Marketing, BC TEL Advanced Communications. "This solution provides customers with the ability to dynamically select content provider services and enables BC TEL and content providers to work in a very flexible management model. Service subscription management has reduced our operations costs and provided greater visibility and control to BC TEL content and VPN provider partners."
Newbridge has been a long-standing, active member of the TeleManagement Forum - a global consortium of service providers and suppliers that provides leadership to the telecom industry on the most effective ways to improve the management of public networks and services in today's competitive global market.
"End -to-end management is really the key for service providers who intend to succeed in a global, competitive market," said Elizabeth Adams, President of the TeleManagement Forum. "It is one thing to automate specific functions, but it is quite another to achieve an efficient operation, where systems are well linked and able to support fast provisioning of services and rapid response to problems. Newbridge has recognized the need for its management systems software to work with other systems to achieve this type of end-to-end automation, and it is good to see continued advancement of the Company's efforts in this area."
The Newbridge managed broadband access capabilities are being demonstrated at TeleManagement World in Dallas from October 13 to 15.
