TDK Doubles DVD-RAM Disc
Capacity

TDK has developed the technology to manufacture single-sided 4.7GB
DVD-RAM discs, almost doubling the capacity of current DVD-RAM
media, the company reported yesterday.

Kuniyoshi Matsui, who became TDK's president on Oct. 1, said that unlike
the 2.6GB media now available, the new discs can be read by DVD movie
players and DVD-ROM drives. The larger-capacity discs are
manufactured by reducing the mark length of the "pits" in which data are
stored from .61 micrometers to .40 micrometers.

A 4.7GB DVD RW disc has also been developed by TDK, but will not ship
until there is a proven need for it in the market, Matsui said.

TDK did not have a ship date or price for the new media, but a 2.6GB
DVD-RAM disc sells for about $39.
