I think he way overstates the "influence" that the religious right exerts on the GOP. The Republican leadership gives them lots of promises, but no real influence. None of the religious right's leaders have ever served in any Republican Administration. The party was and still is controlled by pragmatists and economic conservatives who have little liking for the social agenda of the religious right. They simply want their votes. The only bunch that seems to believe the religious right controls things are the hysterics on the left, and a few Republicans who are looking for a reason for why they lost with Dole.
