As has previously pointed out, because IBM was always sold out of chips, when you bought a chip from IBM you always got the most current, lowest power chip available, whereas Cyrix was until recently still shipping chips built many months ago. With the recent large sales of 6x86s this problem should be diminished now, and the fact that your new Cyrix chip is a .35u is a good sign.

Also, while the chips are built on the same production line, and there is no difference between the wafers or chips, the two companies have independant testing. It has been alledged here and elsewhere that Cyrix is somewhat more liberal than IBM in assigning speed grades to the various chips. Thus Cyrix could call a chip a P200+ while IBM might choose to call the same chip a P166+. No proof of a difference in testing standards has been offerred, but it is accepted folklore by many people on the web.
