alex, Re: "The company guidance for the 4th quarter is flat with 3rd quarter or thereabouts."

You have to be careful with exact words in earnings statements. From the company's statement:

** The company expects revenue for the fourth quarter of 1998
to be up slightly from third quarter revenue of $6.7 billion.
Consistent with the company's earlier expectations, second
half revenue is expected to be greater than first half revenue.

The difference between flat and up slightly doesn't sound like much, but can be very large, especially with a company as conservative as Intel with regard to forward looking statements. In other words, up slightly can become up majorly.

I also have to believe that if 4Q were not already looking very good, they would have sandbagged I mean erred on the side of pushing borderline 3Q-4Q sales into 4Q.
